5 Tips for a Successful Logo Design

Author By Author

Your logo is a big part of your practice's identity. Just like a great hairdo, a logo leaves a lasting impression, creates a brand identity and simply states who you are. That's why your logo should take a prominent position on your website.

Use our five tips on creating a logo that leaves a lasting mark on your website and on customers:

1. Keep it simple. A logo containing a graphic icon that complements some typographical treatment will establish a strong visual identity for your company. A simple design will ensure this is done quickly, leaving a lasting impression.

2. Make it scalable. To make sure your logo is legible in any format, scale it down small enough to print on letterhead or as a return address on an envelope. You don't want any of the design elements or text to get lost or blend together when your logo is made smaller. You never know when you'll want to have your logo embroidered on a shirt or printed on a pen!

3. Pick the right font. With so many fonts to choose from, picking the right one for your practice can be somewhat intimidating. Experiment with your design using different fonts, but try to avoid the most common ones (like system fonts) and anything overly decorative, because those won't scale well. Aim to select a font that matches your practice's personality.

4. Choose your colors wisely. One or two is a good number of colors for a logo. You can opt for a more complex color scheme, but in addition to a multicolored logo, make sure you also create a black-and-white plus a two-color version so you're prepared for any output. Research the different moods that different colors evoke so you can convey the mood you want for your practice.

5. Remember Gestalt. Reviewing the Gestalt rules of design will inspire you as you create your company's unique logo. The six basic Gestalt Principles are similarity, continuity, closure, proximity, figure/ground relationship and symmetry. If you incorporate at least one or two of these, your logo's sure to be a winner!
